I and my wife are going to NIAGARA FALLS and Toronto and we will need to carry some kind of phones with us to call within Canada and back to US ,
but it is too costly due to roaming, long distance and many other charges. Our phones are the TMO GS2 and the MT4G.
Can I carry my phone to canada, leave the sim here and buy Canadian sim and prepaid phone cards?
Where can I get sim card and phone cards to use for our canadian trip?
what are our options?
You can call T-Mobile and let them know your plans and they can give you a SIM unlock code to unlock your phone so that you can use it with an international SIM card, then once you get to Canada you can pick up a local SIM card and stick it in your phone and voila!
where can I buy a canadian prepaid SIM card and prepaid phone card? any online stores? I would like to get them while in US.
what about DATA? the hotel lobby i will stay has WIFI, but i dont want to get HIT with DATA CHARGES!
I've never looked into buying a "prepaid canadian SIM card" but I'd imagine google could help you out with that. If your T-Mobile SIM isn't in your phone when you go to canada you won't get hit with any data, it will all go through the local CA SIM. You won't pay a dime for wifi, and in fact you could use wifi calling through the hotel and it would be free through T-Mobile if you called the US.
if my phone doesnt have US sim when i am in canada , will the DATA still be there through wifi?
what about the google voice numbers, it is a free call within US and Canada, will still get HIT with tmobile roaming/data charges?
Best bet is getting a canadian sim andcanadian prepaid card for calls within canada and back to US?
That's correct, the Canadian SIM is the only way to make sure you don't get hit with ANY T-Mobile charges. If your T-Mobile SIM is not in your phone there is no way they can charge you for ANYTHING. Wifi will not use plan data, it is free!
shouldn't there be some kind of SIM in the phone in order to use the wifi ?
If you wanted to use wifi calling then you'd need your T-Mobile SIM in there, but if you just want to use wifi to access webpages and email and stuff you don't need a SIM
what if i use WIFI CALLING in canada to call back to US or within canada?
roaming charges? the moment i turn the phone on, I will start getting HIT with roaming charges, NO?
Here's some reading for you - knowledge is power:
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1680 - most important about rates & billing using wifi calling
In the end, if you want to avoid headaches or worry about roaming charges, take out your T-Mobile SIM and use a Canadian SIM. Call T-Mobile today and they can set you up with an unlock code that you enter once you put the Canadian SIM in; it's really not any more complicated than that...
