Although I've already expressed my view of the topic, I'm just posting this for information to anyone that might be interested in reading. It points to the latest AV-Test results.
From what I've gathered with my years of experience with Android and research I've done, you don't really "need" antivirus software on your phone. Sure, the companies developing this software would tell you otherwise, but the the fact of the matter is if you download your apps from reputable sources (e.g. Google Play, Amazon, etc) you should be okay. Also, be sure to check the permissions to make sure the app isn't requesting unusual things from your phone. Check out this article for more info: Do you really need antivirus on your Android phone?
