I have the iPhone 4S with the my 4G plan $50 Unlim Talk, Text, and Web but I can't activate FaceTime and iMessage with my phone number instead I have to use an email address.
Since IOS5, we were able to activate both iMessage and Facetime on our 3GS (no facetime) , 4 & 4S (all factory unlock and not jailbreak). What I found is that it still uses international sms to activate them, so you need to make sure you don't have international sms blocked and of cause you will need to pay for them. 2nd thing I found is that it will only activate correctly if "My number" under Settings->Phone is +1(XXX)XXX-XXX. One of our line shows up without the + and did not activate until I added the "+" and turned iMessage/facetime off and on again and it activates OK.
Once activated, I've never see any extra international sms except once after I went overseas, switched sim card and come back.
I was having problems with this tonight but resolved it, Facetime and iMessage are now working perfectly. Apparently to activate Facetime your phone has to send an international sms. Because you are on pay as you go, you have to have extra money in your account to pay for the international message (intl msgs aren't included in unlimited texting). Once I added an extra $5 to my account, they both magically worked. And for some reason they were able to activate with my number instead of just my email address like before.
did you manage to work your facetime and iMessage?
I have a factory unlocked 4S and got it to work with pay as you go. I added 10 dollars, edited my phone number with a +1 in the front under phone settings and turned on iMessage and Facetime and within a minute tested it and both are showing under my T mobile number. ON the iPhone go to Settings and select phone icon click on my number and put a + in front of the +1(000)000-0000 ex. Running IOS 5.1 Hope it helps.
help, i read all these replies and i tried to add the + but it says "phone number could not be saved"....how to fix this please?!
When I first got my iphone 4 i got imessage activated by the # and it kept sending the int'l text every time i used it. Any ideas why I keep getting charged but you state you don't?
Did you turn off iMessage and on again? Everytime you turn iMessage off and on again, it sents another international sms to activate it again. Also, if iMessage does not get activated for some amount of time after the sms was sent (or gets deactivated some how), it will try again by sending another sms.
HERES THE ANSWER!!!!
After searching for solutions, I've finally found it. Simply TEXT "Act1vate" to "+447537410277". After that, turn iMessage and facetime on, and you're all set! People will be able to reach you on your number instead of your email
