Hello. I just got a Nokia Lumia 710 yesterday, which is also my first smart phone. So far, I really like it for the most part...
I first set up my Gmail account through the phone. I discovered that ALL my email contacts were now pulled thru and into my Phone's contact list. I HATE THIS! So I went into the account's setting to specify that I didn't want the contacts to pull through. Perfect. Simple. So next, I set up my Hotmail account. BIG MISTAKE! Now, all my email contacts are in the phone, there is NO account setting to control this, no available filter to specify between which is displayed and I can't delete my stupid Windows Live account from the phone now. Shouldn't a Windows phone be able to better control my Microsoft email settings!? Looks like now all the contacts in my phone prior to the Windows Live are not considered Windows Live ID contacts. I cannot find ANYWHERE in my Hotmail Contacts where I can control which ones pull through or not. I HATE THIS SO MUCH! How can I disassociate the Live ID from my phone? Or get all my email contacts OFF my phone, without actually deleting them? Or how can I delete my Live ID account or just reset my phone back to square one?
To get your Nokia Lumia back to square one, you can do a master reset.
A hard reset restores the original factory settings and may erase all downloaded content, including ringtones, images, programs, and contacts stored in the internal memory. It does not erase data stored on the SIM card (if available). To perform a hard reset, follow these steps:
thanks joel. looks like i'll have to go this route. good thing i haven't done much in the phone yet!
I believe there is also another way through filtering.
Go to "People" and acess the menu at the bottom (the three ...)
now select "filter my contact list"
and select which accounts you wish to be able to view (or not view)
Been using the W7 phones since the Dell Venue Pro (pre Mango) and really like it
I do hope that helps you (or someone else) out.
that was the exact problem. it wouldn't let me filter anything once the hotmail account was added, via settings>email+accounts. with my gmail account, i was able to filter my contact list through people>settings>filter my contact list. i could choose whether it would show gmail contacts or phone contacts.... after adding my hotmail account, it converted ALL previously existing phone contacts into windows live id contacts, and thus would not let me filter between the two, since it converted ALL my existing contacts. under the filtering options, it no longer gave me a choice between phone and gmail and whatever else.
i ended up doing a master reset and am hesitant to connect my phone to any of my email accounts, due to all the hassle, which REALLY sucks.
I tend to agree - it makes sense that MSFT would prefer you use Windows Live/hotmail as the primary and so they have set it up to convert any contacts into a Windows Live contact to be 'helpful' and make it convenient but I would debate how convenient that actually is if you don't have it set up that way outside your phone.
It might take some extra effort, but you could export your contacts from your hotmail into your gmail, then sign into the phone with your gmail account only.
Go onto your Windows Live account on your computer. Go to your contacts, you can erase all your contacts from there and add only the contacts you want. This is assuming you don't want your Windows Live Contacts at all. This is time consuming but if you are fast typer then you should be fine.
Second option is go to your people hub,
hit the "..." on the left hand side of the screen
hit "settings" and hit filter my contact list.
Hide the ones you don't want.
3rd option if you have alot of contacts you want mixed in the ones you dont' want. Consider making a 2nd Windows Live account and use this specifically for your phone. Add all the contacts you want manually to your new windows Live account. Then sync this account first on your phone, then add all the other emails, filter everything except the windows live account you are using for your contacts. Voila only the contacts you want.
Using the 3rd option you can link contacts that you may also have from FB, Twitter, Google, so that all their information displays only on your Live account. Simply by using the search function on your people hub, then linking separate accounts together into one.
4th and final option, using option 2 filter ALL your accounts and create groups.
People hub, "+" add group, name group, selected add contact, search for contacts to add to that group.. there you are done.

that was the exact problem. I didn't want to delete ANY of my Hotmail accounts, just to keep them off my phone. That is unacceptable.

That DID NOT work. I first had installed my Gmail account. I could easily choose between phone contacts and Gmail contacts, and filtered the Gmail ones to not show. Once Hotmail was installed, ALL contacts were converted to Windows Live contacts, so I was not able to choose between "Hotmail" and "Phone" contacts any longer.

This is exactly what I did, after doing a hard reset. Now I have a @live.com version of my @hotmail.com address, that is ONLY for my phone.
would the problem be solved by closing out the hotmail ? or would windows live attack any e-mail?
actually, I don't want my PHONE contacts on hotmail/windows live
that is what really bothers me - I like the phone, but I see this as an invasion of privacy and I'm not too happy with it. I feel as though I am exposing my private, personal friends with windows live taking their numbers. not happy camper and I've got a new two year contract - I like T-Mobile, but I'm not happy being forced to "go public". I think I will try cancelling my hotmail e-mail.
The sync of the phone books is controlled by you, you can disable auto sync.
It is not really an invasion of your privacy, only you can see it unless you share your contact list with everyone so you are certianly not going public.
I wish this was the operators fault (T-Mobile, AT&T,Sprint, Verizon) but this is a Microsoft device and it is Windows Live.
T-Mobile is not the cause of this problem, you would be facing this with your phone if you only used it with WiFi networks and no operator involvement.
As someone else suggested , create another Windows Live account (that you will never use) and use that on the phone. disable sync on the accounts you do not wish to sync with.
From thehandset you can associate contsacts together from various sources....or leave them as individual contacts.
I am personally fed up with losing my contact lists when i change phones so Android (through gmail) and Microsoft(through hotmail/live) are making that easy for me and also available online.
thanks so much! now: how do I disable auto sync - is that on the phone? or some website? I really am "not hi tech"
thanks so much!
go into the program "Hotmail", access the options by touching the "..." at the bottom right of the display
then select "settings"
you are presented with "sync settings"
you can modify the "download new content", set it to "manually"
"download email" doesn;t really matter what you set it to
Content to sync Email....leave it unchecked (unless you want to sync your email of course
then you can go back to the "Hotmail" and touch the "..." and go to "link inboxes"
and make sure that nothing is linked to it
Select "People",and choose "filter my contact list"
you can now show the contact list you want....select or deselect whichever you want (or do not want)
scroll down the page and click on each email account you have listed and choose what you wish to sync (or not sync).
under settings I don't have "download new content" the only options are on and off for: conversations and signature. I turned them off. also under people, ther is no options to check for "sync" or not. I really appreciate your help! Thank You.
Hi nothitech, you will see the option for 'download new content' only after you tap the button for 'sync settings' right at the top of your hotmail settings.
Under People, you will not find an option to 'sync,' rather, by checking or unchecking the boxes next to each of the different email accounts you have set up on your phone, you will be telling your phone to display (or not display) those specific contacts when you tap the People tile from the home screen.
I found it!!! I found the "download new content" and switched to to "manual"! Thank you
Under People I don't have the option to check any box, that I found anyway.
But hopefully with the "manual" download, my phone numbers will not be copied up to the hotmail website
