How configure iPhone for T-Mobile internet?

Google provides many links to attempt to answer this question. One of those links brought me here. Can anyone out there help me answer this question?

First: These comments are based on the assumption that your iphone is 3-3G-3GS-4 and native to AT&T.

The iphone will have to be jailbroken and unlocked to accept another carrier's SIM card. Apple nor AT&T will unlock your phone. Take it to almost any repair shop. it'll cost you around 20 bucks. It's easy to do- I had it done to mine.

That being said, an unlocked iphone will accept another carrier's SIM; BUT...the iphone's 3G carrier signal is proprietary to AT&T and will not work with any other carrier, so you'll have to turn off 3G in the phone's settings. Your iphone would work, but it would have maddeningly slow data transfer rates unless you restrict your data usage to times when you have a good, strong WiFi signal. After you get it jail broken and unlocked, you can pop your SIM card into the iphone and it'll fire right up. Also, you're going to HAVE to turn off automatic updating as well. If your iphone updates itself, it'll take out the jailbreak as well, and you won't be able to redo it right away.

    Try This...

To  set up iPhone Internet connectivity with T-Mobile--

    1. From the main menu, scroll to and select Settings.
    2. Select General.
    3. Select Network.
    4. Verify the following  settings:
      • 3G
      • Cellular Data is set to On.
      • Data Roaming
      • Internet Tethering

Note: The Apple iPhone is missing the WCDMA 1700 band, and cannot function on the T-Mobile 3G  network.

    1. Select Cellular Data Network.

Note: In software versions prior to 2.0, Cellular Data Network is called EDGE.

    Thanks,

I have a 3Gs and this seems to be working. I'd heard and read that the 3G should be on from some sites but things seem much faster with it off. And that only APN & MMS = epc.tmobile.com were the only things to be changed.

It works better using your settings.

I have an unlocked (gevey ultra), jailbroken iphone 4 that would otherwise be locked to at&t. I am aware t-mobile 3G service will not work with my iphone. How about internationally? The place I'll be going has a 1900 band frequency.

  • 6. Re: How configure iPhone for T-Mobile internet?

rogueuser's statement confusing as it relates to "The iphone will have to be jailbroken and unlocked". His statements "are" correct if you have a locked iphone.

However If you have an Apple "factory unlocked" iPhone (which I have 2) then my instructions above are correct. To clarify, the iPhone's 3G GSM UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz frequencies are not supported by T-Mobile today.  T-Mobile's 3G UMTS in the US uses the 2100/1700 MHz band. The iPhone can use GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) for data support on T-Mobile but only at EDGE speeds (read slow). If your iphone is factory unlocked you can use the T-Mobile micro-SIM and register your iphone. If the iphone is factory unlocked, you can leave automatic updates turned on.

    Hope this helps.

Ahoover: I believe you need to fully read my message and the previous messages as I was quoting par64mfl from a previous message listed in the first two paragraphs of the message. Hence the quotation marks from paragraph 1 and 2. I posted the quote from that user because I was confused myself about his comment.

The third paragraph where I mentioned gevey ultra is my actual message. The comment was not really confusing at all. I have an unlocked (gevey ultra), jailbroken iphone 4 that would otherwise be locked to at&t. I am aware t-mobile 3G service will not work with my iphone. I was posting because I wondering about how it would do internationally on other carriers abroad. I am currently using tmobile prepaid by the day package on an iphone 4 as a "test" of how the phone works unlocked. I have verizon on my main iphone 4 so I am using tmobile on the 2nd iphone 4 to test it, so after i finish testing it I will terminate my prepaid account. The reason 3G internet doesn't work on the iphone 4 via tmobile here is because tmobile uses the 1700 band, which the iphone currently lacks. However, the country I'll be going to has a 1900 band frequency on their carriers, so I assume I will be a able to get 3G internet and the works there, but I was't sure so I was asking here. My apologies for any confusion caused.
