You will get the wifi calling feature fairly soon, it's just delayed a little bit for some reason.
Not surprised at all. Hopefully the software upgrade will come before the SGS3 is released!
Tether doesn't work for free, like every other android phone on tmobile...except maybe the Amaze.
I have the SGSII, bought via Target Mobile. However, I have used the new sim card that came with the new phone, and there is no difference between the options displayed with old sim card. Can somebody from T-Mobile clarify what is what? Also, further down in the discussion is mentioned that using WiFi Tethering is charged, is this true?
The long thread appears to make things more confusing. Any official post would be helpful.
Does anyone from t-mobile actually read this stuff?
So I went and looked again at both the t-mobile.com shop AND the wirely.com shop (where I orderd from, should ship tomorrow) - when I select the GS2 and add it to the cart, then select a family plan, there is no option to choose tethering at all. Under "Wi-fi and Tethering", you can choose "Hotspot".
With other phones, the option is there.
I just realized that I didn't have the choice under the options on wirefly.com either when I ordered.
Does this phone NOT support tethering?? If it doesn't support tethering OR wifi calling, I might send it back before I even open the box.
Not free tethering, and wifi doesn't work.
wifi calling doesn't work...wifi does lawl...
I hope we get wifi calling on this device soon. I need it and it's one of the reasons I use t-mobile.
just bought phone yesterday and was told it does support wifi calling but upon coming phone and attempting to make calls wifi, it wouldnt allow me to. I call customer service and they informed me this phone does not support wifi calling, bummer..may switch to amaze phone if it supports wifi
The Amaze is too heavy/bulky and does not support wifi calling yet either.
Also, tethering via wifi drops the data connection and requires the $9.99 tethering add-on. This phone is great but these issues make it somewhat less flexible than the MyTouch 4G it replaced.
So will it be supported in the future or no?
The Wifi calling is supposed to be added to this phone within the next couple of months, the person that you spoke with might have been clueless. Battery life is supposed to be pretty terrible on the Amaze, so it would probably be wise just to sit tight for the moment.
As of today's date (10/13/2011), the Galaxy S II from T-Mobile does not have the capability to make calls via Wi-Fi. The needed software is not yet available on the device.
The software will become avialable to users via a maintenance release at which time the device will then support this function. It's not a hardware change that is needed, but another bit of software that needs to be added to the phone.
The Wi-Fi calling that will be available on the device will be IMS-based (as opposed to UMA or GAN).
To use this new IMS-based Wi-Fi calling, you will need to switch to the new SIM card included in your device kit. You may switch now so you don't have to worry about switching later (and that's what I'd recommend doing to save you time later).
The date for this software release has not yet been announced, so stay tuned.
HTC Amaze does support wifi calling. Just go to the setting and you can find Wifi Calling setting and turn it on. I went to the t-mobile retail store and checked it. This option was there.
