Unfortunately, the author of that piece completely misses the main delaying factor - the need to integrate the new OS with the specific hardware through modification of the kernel.  Each hardware-specific component requires a different driver to be integrated and tested. Some manufacturers and devices get an advantage because Google have developed the OS using those devices, while others don't ever get that close.

Yeah, I was over 1,600 posts and had put in a lot of time looking up information for people or getting the info from work.  The time I spent did help out those people but now it's lost for anyone else that does a search on a topic that I answered.  Oh well.

I also had a lot of posts (about 700) and I know that I had helped a lot of people as well, even for minor issues. I have seen the moderators mention that they will be getting us all access to the old forums, however, due to all the feedback they've gotten. That will be nice, so we can easily pull the info we need.

Of course we're not getting Gingerbread. Why would T-Mobile do that when the phone has been EOL'd? It's far more lucrative for T-Mobile to say "oh you want Gingerbread AND your warranty? Here, buy {shiny new phone}, it would be great if you renewed your contract too while you're at it"

TM have updated the OS on several devices after they went EOL. That isn't a definitive test of whether or not it will happen in this case.

I mean, I do see how you could come to that conclusion, but it doesn't make sense to me. There has been a lot of evidence to support the fact that the OTA update will come out, including people who received refurbs with 2.3 already on it just to name one item.

                  I blame the saucer people.

Refurbs coming back with 2.3 was a mistake. There is 0 evidence that it is coming out. At best, it was in development, they realized it broke Netflix and said "welp, we need to wait for Netflix, so instead we'll just make sure our new phones work with Neftlix/2.3 off the bat".

                    • 22. Re: Gingerbread?

2.3 IS working for Netflix on other phones, so it doesn't make sense that they would just not send out an update because of one app. It may have been a mistake but it showed that they had MADE the update. I still don't understand why anyone is on the bandwagon of "since 2.3 doesn't work for an app, we'll toss it." They've not done that before, so why now?

                      • 23. Re: Gingerbread?

If only all phones were the same then we'd all get updates the exact same day (a la iOS, Windows Phone 7), alas Android is fragmented and telcos/OEMS are more concerned about branding than updates.

So let's say Netflix isn't the reason, then what is? More importantly why are both HTC and T-Mobile completely silent about it? I'll tell you why, because they would rather we forgot about it and either just stuck with 2.2 or bought a new phone because there will never be an OTA update to Gingerbread for the T-Mobile G2.

                        • 24. Re: Gingerbread?

I don't understand how people have just decided that it won't get the OTA update. The reasons I have seen have all been based on speculation (and yes, I realize the same is true for the reasons I believe that it WILL get it, along with all the postings on TmoNews: http://www.tmonews.com/category/t-mobile-g2/) and just plain pessimism towards HTC and T-Mobile.

                          • 25. Re: Gingerbread?

I know why......It's because some of us have been bad and we are all paying the price!

                            • 26. Re: Gingerbread?

I was thinking......I don't recall seeing any official documentation from T Mobile or HTC indicatiing that this device would receive updates before any other devices. It' possible we falsely assumed this, then perpetuated this thought through this forum and others.

I'm not saying this means we will never get an update. I just think we may of made wishful, yet false assumptions.

                              • 27. Re: Gingerbread?

You're absolutely right. We never had any official word from either company about the G2 getting the update first. I think it was most conjecture since we all thought it was "vanilla android."

                                  tcope
Its incorrect posts like this that just make matters worse. You can be unhappy that its not been released but don't act like TM ever announced when 2.3 would be released for the G2.

                                  Its getting old really quick.
                                  • 29. Re: Gingerbread?

Agree tcope. There has been so much speculation out there, that at times it's hard to remember what the official word is, as opposed to what we have all concluded.
