I was checking into unlocking my phone and one of the places that do that told me that if the phone is unlocked the data will drop down to 2g and the phone will be much slower. I asked him if he meant just on the new sim or even when working with the old sim and my current T-Mobile plan. He said that everything would slow down on either type of service. I have never heard this before. Is he full of it?
Another question - Do you have to wait until the day before you will be traveling to have T-Mobile unlock your phone? I was told that by a T-Mobile customer service rep. Other people have told me that you can have it unlocked anytime you wish.
He's full of it.
No matter if your phone is locked or unlocked, if it's a T-Mobile branded device, it will work 100% with T-Mobile's network.
That said, you will most likely only get 2G/Edge speeds when off of T-Mobile's network. So, going to Europe (with one of their SIMs) with the unlocked phone, you'll get 2G speeds. Return back to the States and pop in your T-Mobile SIM, you will be back on the network here and work beautifully.
Also, DON'T pay to do it.
http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1588 has instructions to request one FREE from T-Mobile (provided you meet all the requirements)
Thanks. That's what is suspected.
