    Bryanus;

    All of what you said is very well known. They've been doing this for as long as I've been with T-Mo, back with my G2 did the same thing. I've done this same test many times with no failures.

    They will block Chrome on the desktop, but not Firefox or Safari (or Chrome with a UAstring switcher).

    The problem here is that I'm on a 5gb plan. I can't even add tethering to my plan and I'm getting blocked.

    It is absolutely nuts that I can't use a browser from the Play Store on my phone. There are other browsers available, T-Mobile can't tell me to use the built in Browser only. Its my device, not theirs. I'm not doing anything wrong by downloading an app (from Google, no less) and using it on my device.

    Could the CS rep not remove the flag from your account?

    Absolutely legitimate and any suggestion that you need to spend more unjustifiably to fix their problem is pure BS.  COME ON TM, THIS SHOULD BE AN EASY FIX.

  • 17. Re: Tethering Error

    My bill reset and now I'm "allowed" to browse on HSPA using Chrome without getting redirected. We'll see how long this goes for.

  • 18. Re: Tethering Error

    Thanks for the update martonikaj. That's very interesting. And no, the rep said there was no way to remove the flag on my account. He surmised that the UA of Chrome Beta was being recognized as a desktop browser and got blocked after a certain download limit. And that upgrading to the hotspot would be the only way to remove this restriction from my account.

    The only way i got around this was to upgrade to the 5GB plan, which currently offers the free hotspot feature now. I don't know if you knew that, but they started bundling that feature for the 5 and 10GB plans back in January, but do not advertise it:

    http://www.tmonews.com/2012/01/t-mobile-launching-new-hush-hush-promotional-plans-on-january-25th/

    Anyway, the rep also tossed me a little discount for the next 3 months, making the upgrade to the 5Gb plan $15/m for me instead of the normal $25/m. I went for it, hoping that over the next 3 months T-Mobile would be more aware of this issue and the existence of the Chrome Beta for Android browser as ICS devices become more prevalent on their network, OR perhaps that by upgrading I would somehow remove the flag on my account when I disable the feature sometime in July when my 3 months is up.

    It's interesting to hear that starting a new billing cycle for you reset the flag so to speak. I think that's actually pretty encouraging to hear. I can easily avoid using Chrome Beta for large downloads, which is what I think triggered the flag in the first place. From your experiece, has a new billing cycle always reset this for you in the past?

    FWIW, there is also thread about this going on at the Chrome Beta for Android google forums. I posted there with a reference back here:

    Bryanus;

    So it could be a coincidence that they reset it the day my billing period reset, but I doubt that.

    Thanks for the links. As I said before, I'm on a 5GB plan already. Kinda sad that the CS rep completely understands that you're using a phone browser, but you're still stuck having to either switch browsers or pay for the tethering plan in order to remove the restriction. I too hope that they start to figure out that they can't block based on UAstring and considering they now have the HTC One S out and pushign it hard, more and more people will be using Chrome Beta and having this issue.

  • 20. Re: Tethering Error

    Hmm, maybe they silently added the hotspot to your existing 5GB plan, since you were already on it and it's now included for free on that plan? Fingers crossed for a boatload of users running Chrome Beta!

    Bryanus;

    Who knows. I hope they figure it out. Quite annoying indeed. They have to have thousands of users on One S's hitting this in the next month.

    After 3 phone calls to agents, changing available networks, changing network mode, clearing the cache, cookies, and history, resetting to default browser serring, having an agent refresh the connection, and removing the SIM and battery for 20 seconds, nothing worked.

    This is what worked for me:

    Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks > Access Point Names

    The bubble next to T-Mobile US wasn't selected. I selected it, then all of my emails came through and all was back to normal. I don't know what it is or how it was turned off, but everything is working now.

    joehui;

    So, did you have the page redirect before or not? I don't get how your post relates to this topic.

    This thread has nothing to do with receiving emails or anything like that. APNs have nothing to do with the tethering redirect problem the other people in this thread are facing.

  • 25. Re: Tethering Error

    Take a chill pill.

    Yes, I had the same redirect problem. That's why I'm posting on here. While having the redirect problem, I also wasn't receiving email notifications.

    Like I said, I don't know what APN is. But once I fixed that setting, I didn't have the redirect problem again.

    Just trying to help. Calm down.

  • 26. Re: Tethering Error

    Another update. I've started getting redirected again this month, 15 days into my cycle. 780mb used this month, and about 135mb in Chrome Beta. Still on $30 Monthly 4G and my Galaxy Nexus.

    Tweeted @TMobilehelp and got a quick reply that they're "aware of the problem" and "working on a solution". They advise in the meantime to use another browser. Pretty assinine, considering that Chrome Beta for Android has been out for several weeks now and they still are trying to catch tethering by sniffing UAstrings.

    Seriously NOT happy with this. They need to figure it out, because I should be able to use whatever browser I choose.

  • 27. Re: Tethering Error

    In fact, it's been around for a few months now.  For T-Mobile to insist that it's Google's problem and not T-Mobile's for incorrectly assuming that we're using a device external from our phones is not right and violates their service agreement with us.

    I'd suggest all those that feel they're done with T-Mobile and finally ready to move to Verizon to use this as your reason to get out of contract.  You can get out of your contract if you desire without being responsible for a breakup fee for the reason that T-Mobile has not fulfilled the contract agreement.  They will not tell you this until you fight them for it, but they must.  If they are limiting legitimate traffic, they are breaking contract, wether they mean to or not, it is their choice and you cannot be held responsible for that.

    I loved T-Mobile and hate to leave, but they've cost me over 40 hours of customer support calls in the last year, all of which they finally admit the problem was on their end and apologize, but apologies aren't going to give me my time back.  Good luck and I hope T-Mobile fixes this issue for you guys soon.

  • 28. Re: Tethering Error

    Thank you so much for your suggestion!    I was not getting any email notifications and all I got when trying to go to the web was the tmobile redirect.     Now my phone is working again!

  • 29. Re: Tethering Error

    Glad it helped!
