There shouldn't be any request for a SIM card number when completing the update. I've successfully completed the update without a SIM card in the device. Have you tried completing the update without the SIM card in the device? Also, what software and firmware versions are you running on your device?

The T-mobile store resolved my issues.
I just brought my phone to the T-mobile store and told them the symtoms.
My phone was reset by the store and after this I do not have any problems with my phone.
@ Ian: I have never tried the updates without my sim card.
@ Drew: I have my sim card in the whole time.
