well, to add insult to injury - I entered the code, started the download.... and it didn't download anything. Stuck at 0% for about 10 minutes. Then it just stops. No message, no error, just done. No upgrade was completed (my wife swears hers told her she successfully upgraded, but it still reads 2.2.1) and nothing changed.
And re-entering the code from the dialer - nothing. Nothing happens at all, on either of our phones. It's as if T-mobile crossed our names off some list.
I've just about had it with this phone.
HAHAHAHAHAH! I knew it!
Check out the link to the DOC-1818 again.
Software versions 1.17.531.2 and 1.14.531.1
Update is paused.
Cannot download the update manually, nor receive it as an OTA. T-Mobile does not know when the the update will resume.
We will update this page immediately when more information is available.
WHAT A $!@#$!!! CROCK!!!!!
Thought I'd add another data point. My MyTouch 4G received the "system update" notification on Tuesday (24th). I decided to try it, and forced it to use WiFi, and plugged the phone in, figuring that would be safer.
Shortly after the download began the phone screen turned off and the phone rebooted. The download seemed to continue, but the phone reverted from ADW.launcher to HTC sense, and many apps started force closing. The update download then stuck at 81%, and some apps would not work - gmail crashed immediately.
After leaving it for a couple of hours with no change, I called support. They had me do a factory reset, which failed. I tried it a couple more times, no luck. I was the proud owner of an expensive paperweight. Actually it's not really heavy enough even to be a paperweight!
Took it into the nearest store, he tried a few more things, no luck, my phone is fried. He did say that apps crashing is expected after the update, "you have to go to the market and re-download them" -- is this true?
Thankfully I'm still in the 1 year warranty, so replacement is free, but naturally T-Mobile ding you a $20 "processing fee" -- for the privilege of fyring your phone and having to replace it! Although to be fair it's probably not their fault that the factory reset failed. I would have been really upset if it were out of warranty.
Given that I'm happy with Android 2.2 I'll probably just refuse the update on the new phone; I really don't want to go through this again! Does 2.3 really have enough new stuff to be worthwhile? The only complaint I have is that the phone freezes for up to 30sec (!) periodically, but who knows whether this is Android or the phone itself.
I can't help but wonder if they paused the update because it was bricking too many phones.
update yesterday to http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1818
Beginning March 15, the myTouch 4G software update will resume for devices on software 1.14.531.1 and 1.17.531.2. This is a two-part update. After both parts of the update, the devices will be updated to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) / Software 2.32.531.1. This update will continue until April 15.
still not holding my breath. Especially now that CM9 is on the way.
Well, here we are, my phone has the bubble saying an update is available.
Guess we'll find out tonight if it worked. My wife's phone got the update a couple weeks ago, and seems to be running fine. I think I'll go ahead with the update and if I think it sucks I'll go back and put it in Froyo and root it to load CM, as it looks like it's going to be a long time before ICS/CM9 comes out on the MT4G.
