Understanding the software version

Apple software updates for iOS introduce new features and improvements that lets you do even more with their iPhone, iPad and other iOS devices. Updating the software on an iOS device is easy.

 

You can update in two ways:

 

  • Over the air (OTA) update: This is done on the iPhone wirelessly over the T-Mobile network or over Wi-Fi.
  • Manual download: This is completed using iTunes on a computer connected to the internet.

Check software version

To check the current software version, follow these steps:

 

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Scroll down to Version to view the software version.

 

 

Download update from Apple

You can check for updates and request to download the update from the Apple servers. To check for updates and download, follow these steps:


  1. From the Home Screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Software Update.
  4. After the device searches for available software updates, it will display the current version.
  5. If an update is available, tap Download.
  6. After the download has completed, tap Install to update.

 

 

Manually update over USB using iTunes

You can manually update the software using iTunes on a computer with internet access. To manually update over a USB cable, follow these steps:


  1. Connect iPhone to the computer using the included USB cable.
  2. After iTunes opens, select your device when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
  3. Click Check for Update in the Summary pane.
  4. If an update is available, iTunes prompts you to download and install the update.
    • Important: Do not disconnect your device until the update has finished.

 

 

Check / Update Carrier Settings

After receiving a notification that you received the OTA update, you may download it. To download, follow these steps:


  1. From the Home Screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. After the device searches for available software updates, it will display the current version.
  5. If a 'Carrier Settings Update' is available, you will receive a pop-up notification. Tap Update.
  6. If you are experiencing any issues updating and you have access to a computer, attempt to manually update over USB.
  7. If you do not have access to a computer, follow these steps:
    1. Reset Network Settings
      1. From the home screen, tap Settings.
      2. Tap General.
      3. Tap Reset.
      4. Tap Reset Network Settings.
    2. Attempt the Carrier Settings Update again.
    3. If the issue persists, complete a master reset.
    4. Attempt the Carrier Settings Update again.
