Backlight

Brightness

To make the screen backlight brighter or darker, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap the All Apps icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap System.
  3. Scroll to 'DEVICE,'  then tap Display.
  4. Tap Brightness.
  5. Touch and slide the Brightness slider left or right to adjust the setting.

 

 

 

Timeout / sleep

To change the time before the backlight times out, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap the All Apps icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap System.
  3. Scroll to 'DEVICE,'  then tap Display.
  4. Tap Sleep.
  5. Select one of the following options:
    • 15 seconds
    • 30 seconds
    • 1 minute
    • 2 minutes
    • 5 minutes
    • 10 minutes
    • 15 minutes
    • 30 minutes

Home screen

Widgets & shortcuts


You can add widgets to the lock screen and swipe between them.

 

Lock screen widgets let you scan recent Gmail messages,  calendar entries, and other app content without unlocking your screen. If your tablet is set up for more than one user, you may need to touch your image at the bottom of the screen to see your own lock screen. To set or change the type of lock, go to to Settings > Personal > Security > Screen lock.

 

Add an app or widget to Home screen

 

  1. Go to the Home screen where you want to place the app or widget.
  2. Tap the All Apps icon.
  3. Swipe right, if necessary, to find the app or widget you want.
  4. ouch & hold the app or widget until the Home screen appears, slide it into place, and lift your finger.

 

Move an app or widget to a different location on a home screen

 

  1. Tap and hold the icon.
  2. Slide your finger to the new position.
  3. To move between Home screens, slide toward the edge of the screen.
  4. To bump another icon out of the way, slide slowly into it.
    • Lift your finger.
    • The icon drops into its new position.
  5. To create a folder, slide one icon quickly over another.
  6. To rename a folder, touch its name.

 

Open Google Now from lock screen

 

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the lock screen.
  2. Enter your PIN, pattern, or password if prompted.

 

Add a widget to lock screen

To add a widget to the lock screen, follow these steps:

 

  1. If the lock screen has no widgets yet, you’ll see a large Plus icon.
  2. If you don’t see it, swipe any existing widgets from left to
  3. right until it appears.
  4. Tap the Plus icon. If prompted, enter your PIN, pattern, or password.
  5. A list of widgets appears. Apps that support lock screen widgets can add their own widgets to this list.
  6. Touch the widget you want to add.

 

Note: You can add up to five widgets to your lock screen. To move between them, swipe across the top of the screen in portrait mode, or across the left side of the screen in landscape mode.

 

Reorder lock screen widgets


  1. Touch & hold a widget.
  2. Drag the widget and release it in the location of your choice.

 

Remove a lock screen widget

 

  1. Touch & hold the widget.
  2. Drag widget onto the Remove icon.

 

 

Home screen wallpaper


To change the wallpaper that’s displayed on your Home screens, follow these steps:

 

  1. Tap and hold anywhere on a Home screen that’s not occupied.
  2. A list of options appears.
  3. Touch a wallpaper source:
    • Gallery: Choose from pictures that you have synced with your tablet.
    • Live Wallpapers: Choose from a scrolling list of animated wallpapers.
    • Wallpapers: Choose from thumbnails of default images, or touch a thumbnail for a larger version.
  4. You can download additional wallpapers on Google Play.

 

To set a wallpaper, follow these steps:

 

  1. Tap Set wallpaper.
  2. For Gallery images, drag the blue dots to determine the cropping.
  3. Tap OK.

Keyboard

Change default keyboard

To change the default keyboard settings, follow these steps:


  1. From any Home screen, tap the All Apps icon.
  2. Scroll to and tap System.
  3. Scroll to 'PERSONAL,' and then tap Language & input.
  4. Tap Default.
  5. Tap Setup input methods.
  6. Choose default keyboard:
    • Google Keyboard
    • Google Korean keyboard
    • Google Pinyin
    • Google voice typing
    • iWinn IME
  7. Adjust the other settings as necessary.

 

 

Enter symbols & numbers

To enter symbols and numbers with the keyboard, follow these steps:

 

  1. From the alphabet keyboard, tap the 123? key.
  2. Tap the number and symbol keys as necessary.
  3. Tap the ABC key to return to the alphabet keyboard.

 

 

Text entry mode

To change the text entry or predictive text mode, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap System settings.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Scroll to 'PERSONAL,' and then tap Language & input.
  5. Tap Default.
  6. Tap Setup input methods.
  7. Next to 'Google Keyboard,' tap the Settings icon.
  8. Select, clear, or set the following options:
    • Auto-capitalization
    • Sound on keypress
    • Personal dictionary
    • Add-on dictionaries
    • Block offensive words
    • Enable gesture typing
    • Dynamic floating preview
    • Show gesture trail
    • Next word suggestions
    • Advanced settings


Touch & type

 

  • To select or activate something, touch it.
  • To type something, such as a name, password, or search terms, just touch where you want to type.
  • A keyboard pops up that lets you type into the field. Other common gestures include:
    • Touch & hold: Touch & hold an item on the screen by touching it and not lifting your finger until it responds.
    • Drag: Touch & hold an item for a moment and then, without lifting your finger, move your finger on the screen until you reach the target position. For example, you can move apps around on the Home screen.
    • Swipe or slide: Quickly move your finger across the surface of the screen, without pausing when you first touch (so you don’t drag something instead). For example, you can slide a Home screen left or right to view the other Home screens.
    • Double-tap: Tap quickly twice on a webpage, map, or other screen to zoom. For example, double-tap a picture in Chrome to zoom in, and double-tap again to zoom out.
    • Pinch: In some apps (such as Maps, Chrome, and Gallery), you can zoom in and out by placing two fingers on the screen at once and pinching them together (to zoom out) or spreading them apart (to zoom in).
    • Rotate the screen: The orientation of most screens rotates with your device as you turn it. To lock or unlock the screen’s vertical orientation, swipe down from the top right of any screen and touch the Rotation icon in Quick Settings.

 

Type text by speaking

You can use speak to enter text in most places that you can enter text with the onscreen keyboard. To set up and use text to speech, follow these steps:

 

  1. Tap a text field, or a location in text you've already entered in a text field.
  2. Tap the Microphone key on the onscreen keyboard.
  3. When you see a microphone image appear on the screen, speak what you want to type.
  4. Be sure to speak all punctuation marks and say the following for each:
    • Comma
    • Period
    • Question Mark
    • Exclamation Point
  5. When you pause, what you previously spoke is transcribed by the speech-recognition software and entered in the text field, underlined. To remove the underlining, perform any of the following:
    • Tap the Delete key.
    • Resume speaking.
    • Start typing.

Switch windows

To switch back and forth between tasks or windows, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any screen, touch and hold the Home key.
    Note: A list of your recently accessed applications and tasks will appear.
  2. Tap the thumbnail of an application to switch to that window.
