Internal memory (RAM)

Manage memory

To manage the internal memory, follow these steps:

 

Restart device regularly

Note: You should restart your phone at least once per day.

  1. Press and hold the Power key.
  2. Tap Restart.


Reduce memory use
Note
: If your phone is running slow, then you can reduce the amount of memory it is using.

  • Remove widgets (Animated widgets and widgets that update information use the most memory)
    1. From the desired Home screen, touch and hold on the widget.
    2. Drag the widget over the Trash can icon and release your finger.

  • Replace a Live wallpaper
    1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key and then tap Set wallpaper.
    2. Tap Home screen.
      Note: Tap Home and lock screen if you set a Live wallpaper to the lock screen.
    3. Tap either Gallery or Wallpapers.
    4. Follow the prompts to set a new wallpaper that replaces the current Live wallpaper. 
           
  • Remove unused Home screens
    1. From any Home screen tap the Menu key and then tap Edit page.
    2. Touch and hold on the Home screen to be deleted.
    3. Drag your finger (and the Home screen) over the Trash can icon and release your finger.


Manage applications

Note: Manage your applications to keep your device running smoothly.

  • Research and monitor new applications that you install
    • Read Play Store application reviews before installing. Not all applications run smoothly on phones. Read customer reviews before downloading an application to see if it has a history of not working properly.
    • If your device starts having problems after installing an application, consider uninstalling the application (See below: 'Uninstall third-party applications.'

  • Keep applications updated
    1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
    2. Tap Play Store.
    3. Tap the Menu key and then tap My Apps.
      Note: To keep your apps automatically updated, tap the Menu key, tap Settings, tap Auto-update apps and then tap the desired setting when the pop-up window appears.
    4. Choose one of the following options:
      • Tap Update [xx] to update all applications with updates available.
      • Tap an individual application and then tap Update to update a single application.

  • Uninstall third-party applications (see 'Uninstall App')

  • Clear application cache and data (see 'Clear app cache and data')

  • Clear recent applications
    1. From any screen, press and hold on the Home key.
    2. To close an individual recent application, touch an application from the list and drag it to the right.

 

  • Never install a third-party Task Manager or Battery Manager
    • These applications interfere with how Android works

 

 

Task manager

A task manager can view running apps and close them. To use the task manager, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, press and hold the Home key.
  2. Tap the Task Manager task manager icon.jpg icon.
  3. Choose from the following options:

    Close active applications
    • To close active applictions, tap the Active applications tab and then tap End next to the desired application.
      • Tap End all to close all active applications.

        Uninstall applications

    • To uninstall applications, tap the Downloaded tab and then tap Uninstall next to the desired application.

        Clear RAM

    • To clear RAM, first save any necessary data.
    • Tap the RAM tab and then tap Clear memory.

        View available memory

    • To view your memory card and internal memory's available storage, tap the Storage tab.

View Help

    • Touch the tabs section and drag your finger left and then tap the Help tab to read about the RAM manager and how to extend battery life.

 

 

View free memory

To view the amount of free internal memory, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the More tab.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Swipe left to the RUNNING screen.
  6. View the used value at bottom-left.

Internal storage (ROM)

Manage storage

To manage the internal storage space, follow these step

 

Clear storage regularly

Note: Clear storage at least once per week.

  • Check the available internal device storage (see 'View free storage space' below).

    It must be over 150 MB for your device. The Android system cannot work properly if the internal device storage is below 150 MB. If under 150 MB, use the following tips to clear more storage:
    • Delete unnecessary text messages (SMS) and picture messages (MMS).
    • Transfer pictures and media to a computer to remove them from the phone memory.
    • Clear the browser cache, cookies, or history.
    • Clear Facebook app cache.
    • Manage applications. See section below.
    • Delete the call logs.

Adjust memory storage settings

Follow these tips to prevent your ROM storage from quickly filling up.

  • Set text and multimedia message limits to delete messages automatically
    Note: The default is 200 text and 20 picture messages. You may use this setting to start with, and decrease it if you continue to have problems.
    1. From any Home screen, tap Messaging.
    2. Tap the Menu key and then tap Settings.
    3. Tap Text message limit and then set the desired limit. Tap OK.
    4. Tap Multimedia message limit and then set the desired limit. Tap OK.

  • Change Gmail synchronization setting to every three days
    1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
    2. Tap Gmail.
    3. Tap the Menu key and then tap Settings.
    4. Tap your email address.
    5. Tap Days of mail to sync.
    6. Swipe down until 3 is selected.
    7. Tap OK.

Manage applications

Monitor new applications that you install.

  • If your device starts having problems after installing an application, consider uninstalling the application.
  • Consider uninstalling apps using large amounts of ROM.
    1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
    2. Tap Settings.
    3. Tap the More tab.
    4. Tap Application manager.
    5. If necessary, swipe left or right to the All screen or the Downloaded screen.
    6. To sort apps from largest users of ROM to lowest, tap the Menu key and then tap Sort by size. The apps using the most ROM are now listed at the top of the list.
    7. Tap the desired application to be uninstalled.
      Note: Uninstalling an app will delete the app.
    8. Tap Uninstall and then tap OK.

View free storage space

To view the amount of free internal storage, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the More tab.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Under 'Device memory,' view the Available space value. The available space is also represented by the dark region of the bar graph.

SD card

Format SD card

Formatting the SD card deletes all data on it. You may wish to format the SD card if you want to delete the files, if files or apps on the SD card are not working, or if the SD card is not working.

 

To format the SD card while inserted in the device, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the More tab.
  4. Tap Storage.
  5. Under 'SD card,' tap Format SD card.
  6. Tap Format SD card again to confirm. Follow any additional prompts.

 

 

Insert/remove SD card

To insert or remove the SD card, follow these steps:

 

Insert

  1. Power the phone off.
  2. Remove the back cover, as shown above, using the notch (1) located on the side of the phone (2) and gently remove (3).

  3. Insert the memory card with gold contacts facing down and slide in until it clicks.

Remove

  1. Power the phone off.
  2. Remove the back cover using the notch  located on the side of the phone and gently remove.
  3. Gently push the memory card slightly into the compartment until it clicks out.

 

 

Open or delete files using a computer

To open or delete files on the SD card using a computer, follow these steps:

 

Important:You must use the USB cable that comes with your phone.

 

PC

  1. Connect USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
    Note: If necessary, touch the Status bar and drag it down, tap Connected as a media device and then tap Media device to select the check box.
  2. On the computer, click the Open device to view files using Windows Explorer folder or else navigate to and open the phone’s disk drive and navigate to the desired folder.
  3. Navigate to and open the desired folder inside your SD card.
    Note: The Card icon is your SD card and the Phone icon is your device's internal storage.
  4. Locate the folder that contains files you want to delete.
  5. Once you have located the files, right click and select Delete.
  6. When finish, safely disconnect your phone from the computer.

Mac

  1. If necessary, navigate to samsung.com/kies, click DOWNLOAD FOR MAC OS and follow the prompts to download the Kies software.
  2. Connect USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
    Note: If necessary, touch the Status bar and drag it down, tap Connected as a media device and then tap Media device to select the check box.
  3. On your computer, open Kies. Wait until your device name appears under 'Connected devices.'
  4. Inside Kies, navigate to the desired files. If desired, you can navigate the files by viewing the folders by choosing one of the following options:
    • To the right of 'Internal memory,' click the Folder folder icon.jpg icon. Navigate to the desired file.
    • To the right of 'External memory,' click the Folder folder icon.jpg icon. Navigate to the desired file.
  5. To open the file, double-click the file.
  6. To delete files if you accessed the main content section, to the left each desired file, click the check box to select the check box. Click the Trash can icon and then click OK.
  7. To delete the files if you opened the folder icons, press and hold the control key, click one time on the file and then click Delete. Click OK.
  8. When finished, safely disconnect the phone from the computer.

 

 

Open or delete files using the device

To open or delete files on the SD card using the device, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap My Files.
  3. Tap All files.
  4. Tap extSdCard.
  5. Navigate to the desired file or folder.
  6. To open a file or folder, tap the item.
  7. To delete, to the left of each file or folder you want to delete, tap the check box to select the check box.
  8. Tap the Trash can icon at the top of the screen and then tap OK.

 

 

Set default memory storage

By default, the device stores data on the internal storage. To set the default memory storage to another location, follow these steps:


Camera

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Camera.
  3. Tap the Settings settings icon.jpg icon.
  4. Swipe up on the menu, tap Storage, and then tap one of the following options:

    • Phone
    • Memory card

Voice recorder

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Voice recorder.
  3. Tap the Menu key and then tap Settings.
  4. Tap Storage, and then tap one of the following options:

    • Phone
    • Memory card

Internet

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Internet.
  3. Tap the Menu key.
  4. Swipe up on the menu and then tap Settings.
  5. Tap Advanced.
  6. Tap Default storage and then tap one of the following options:

    • Device
    • Memory card

 

Nearby Devices (DLNA)

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the Connections tab.
  4. Tap Nearby devices.
  5. Tap Download to and then tap one of the following options:

    • Device
    • Memory card

 

 

Transfer files between computer & SD card

To transfer files and pictures between the computer and SD card, follow these steps:


Important: You must use the USB cable that comes with your phone.

 

PC

  1. Connect USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
    Note: If necessary, touch the Status bar and drag it down, tap Connected as a media device and then tap Media device to select the check box.
  2. On the computer, click the Open device to view files using Windows Explorer folder or else navigate to and open the phone’s disk drive and navigate to the desired folder.
  3. Navigate to and open the desired folder inside your SD card.
    Note: The Card icon is your SD card and the Phone icon is your device's internal storage.
  4. Locate the folder that contains files saved on your SD card.
  5. Locate the file(s) you want to move on your computer.
  6. Cut or copy and paste the desired file(s) from your computer to your SD card.
  7. When finished, safely disconnect your phone from the computer.

Mac

  1. If necessary, navigate to samsung.com/kies, click DOWNLOAD FOR MAC OS and follow the prompts to download the Kies software.
  2. Connect USB cable to the phone, then to a computer.
    Note: If necessary, touch the Status bar and drag it down, tap Connected as a media device and then tap Media device to select the check box.
  3. On your computer, open Kies.
  4. Inside Kies, choose one of the following options:
    • To the right of 'Internal memory,' click the Folder folder icon.jpg icon. Navigate to where you want to add the file inside your internal device memory.
    • To the right of 'External memory,' click the Folder folder icon.jpg icon. Navigate to where you want to add the file inside your external SD card.
    • Under your device name, click either Music, Photos, Videos, or Podcasts.
  5. On your computer, open the desired files. Drag and drop the music files into Kies.
  6. When finished, safely disconnect the phone from the computer.

 

 

Transfer files between internal storage & SD card

To transfer files and pictures between the internal storage and SD card, follow these steps:


Transfer internal storage files to SD card

  1. From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap My Files.
  3. Tap All files.
  4. Tap sdcard0 to enter your device's internal storage.
  5. Navigate tot to the desired files or folders.To to the left of each desired file or folder, tap the check box to select the check box.
  6. Tap the Menu icon at top-right and then tap Move.
    Note: Tap Copy to duplicate the file or folder.
  7. Tap extSdCard to enter your device's external SD card.
  8. Navigate to where you want to move the content.
  9. Tap Move here.
    Note: To copy the file, tap Paste here.

 

Transfer SD card files to internal storage 

  1. From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap My Files.
  3. Tap All files.
  4. Tap extSdCard to enter your device's external SD card.
  5. Navigate to the desired files or folders.To to the left of each desired file or folder, tap the check box to select the check box.
  6. Tap the Menu icon at top-right and then tap Move.
