Text to speech

Set up & turn on

To set up and use text to speech, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, press the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to and tap Voice input & output.
  4. Tap Text-to-speech settings.
  5. If necessary, tap Install voice data.
    Note: If your phone does not have speech synthesizer data installed, connect to the Google Play Store and let it guide you through the process of downloading and installing the data.
  6. If necessary, tap Accept.
  7. Tap the speech synthesis app you want to download to your SD card.
  8. Tap Accept & download.

 

 

Settings

Text to speech reads messages out loud, allowing you to listen to text or messages instead of reading them. To change text to speech settings, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, press the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to and tap Voice input & output.
  4. Tap Text-to-speech settings.
  5. Tap Speech rate.
  6. Select one of the following options:
    • Very slow
    • Slow
    • Normal
    • Fast
    • Very fast
  7. Tap Language.
  8. Select one of the following options:
    • German (Germany)
    • English (United Kingdom)
    • English (United States)
    • Spanish (Spain)
    • French (France)
    • Italian (Italy)
  9. If desired, tap Listen to an example to listen to a speech example based on your settings.
  10. If desired, tap the Always use my settings checkbox to override application settings.

Voice commands

Open an app

To open apps using voice commands, follow these steps:

Voice dial a contact

To use voice dialing to call a contact, follow these steps:

 

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Tap Voice Dialer.
  3. Say a command when the Voice Dialer displays the “Listening” prompt.
    Example: Speak, “Call John Smith.”
  4. Tap OK.
  5. If you said a name with more than one match in Contacts, or if you stored more than one number for the contact, the phone prompts you to select the number. Confirm your selection.

 

 

Write a text message (SMS) with voice

To write and send a text message (SMS) using voice commands, follow these steps:

 

  1. From the Home screen, tap Messaging.
  2. Open a new text message.
  3. Tap the Type to compose box.
  4. Tap on the Microphone.
  5. Speak out your message.
  6. Press Send.
