Bluetooth – Transfer files

To transfer files using Bluetooth, follow these steps:

Note: Bluetooth must be turned on and paired with another device. If necessary, see the Bluetooth – turn on and pair procedure.

  1. Touch and hold on the file you want to transfer (for example, an image in the gallery).
  2. Tap Send via or Share.
  3. Note: For music files, tap Share music via.
  4. From the list, tap Bluetooth.
  5. Tap the already-paired device you want to transfer the file to.
  6. On the other phone, accept the file.

 

Bluetooth – Turn off and disconnect

To turn off Bluetooth connectivity, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the Bluetooth Slider to turn off. Slider moves left and turns blue.

 

OR

  1. From any Home screen, touch and drag the Status bar down.
  2. Tap Bluetooth to turn off. The green indicator light turns off.

 

Bluetooth – Turn on and pair

To turn on Bluetooth and pair with another device, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the Bluetooth Slider to turn on. Slider moves right and turns green.
  4. Tap Bluetooth.
  5. On the other device, turn on Bluetooth and make it discoverable.
  6. Under Available devices, tap the other device for pairing.
  7. Note: Tap Scan for devices if other device is unavailable.
  8. If prompted, enter the passkey and tap OK.
  9. Otherwise, tap OK to confirm passkey.
  10. On the other device, accept the pairing.
  11. The other device is now listed under Paired devices.

Data synchronization

Disable/Enable Your Mobile Data Connection

To disable your mobile data connection, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Data Usage.
  4. Tap the Mobile data Slider to disable.
  5. Tap OK. Slider moves left and turns blue.

To enable your mobile data connection, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.

  3. Tap Data Usage.
  4. Tap the Mobile data Slider to enable. Slider moves right and turns green.

 

Check Your Data Usage

You can check your phone’s data usage for a desired time period. Also, you can observe the data used by each of your phone’s applications during this period.

To check your data usage, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Data Usage.
  4. If desired, tap Data usage cycle to select a different one-month usage period.
  5. From the graph, touch and drag the vertical White bars to set a beginning and end time period for which to check your data usage.
  6. Note: Below the graph, the dates selected will change when the bars are adjusted.
  7. Below the graph, view the about [xx MB] used data usage value.
  8. Swipe up to view a list of application data usage from largest to smallest.

 

Set a Data Usage Warning

You can set a warning that notifies you when you have exceeded a data usage amount. To set a data usage warning, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Data Usage.
  4. From the graph, touch and drag the horizontal Orange bar up or down to adjust the data value that will trigger a warning for the given time period.
  5. Note: As you drag, the data warning value will change.
  6. The data usage warning is now set.
  7. Note: If you exceed your data warning value, you will receive a notification in your Status bar.

 

Set a Data Usage Limit

You can set a limit for your phone’s data usage. If this limit is reached, your phone’s mobile data connection will be automatically disabled. To set a data usage limit, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Data Usage.
  4. Tap Set data usage limit to select and enable.
  5. Tap OK.
  6. Once enabled, a new horizontal Red bar will appear in the graph.
  7. Touch and drag the horizontal Red bar up or down to set your data usage limit. As you drag, the data limit value will change.

 

Edit application sync settings

To edit application sync settings, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accounts and sync.
  4. Tap the desired application.
  5. Tap to change the sync options as desired.

 

Data synchronization (automatic)

To automatically synchronize data, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accounts and sync.
  4. Tap the Accounts and sync Slider to turn on automatic data synchronization. Slider moves right and turns green.

 

Data synchronization (manual)

To manually synchronize data, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accounts and sync.

Turn on / off GPS

 

Turn on

To turn on GPS, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, touch and drag the Status bar down.
  2. Tap GPS. A green indicator light turns on.

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Location services.
  4. Tap to select the GPS satellites check box to enable.

 

Turn off

To turn off GPS, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, touch and drag the Status bar down.
  2. Tap GPS. The green indicator light turns off.

 

OR

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Location services.
  4. Tap to clear the GPS satellites check box and disable.

Google Maps

Find your location

To find your location with Google Maps, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Tap Maps.
  3. The blinking blue light or arrow shows your location.

 

Get directions

To look up driving directions with Google Maps, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Tap Maps.
  3. Tap the Directions icon (road sign).
  4. Tap My Location if you wish to change your current location.
  5. Enter the desired text and tap the Enter key or tap a selection in the drop-down list.

 

OR

  1. Tap the My location Drop-Down Arrow and tap from the following choices:
    • My current location
    • Contacts
    • Point on map
    • My Places
  2. Tap End point and enter the desired end point and the Enter key on the keyboard or tap a selection from the drop-down list.

 

OR

  1. Tap the End point Drop-Down Arrow and tap one of the following:
    • My current location
    • Contacts
    • Point on map
    • My Places 
  2. Tap the appropriate icon for your mode of transportation:
    • Driving
    • Transit
    • Bicycling
    • Walking
  3. Tap Get directions.

 

Note: You can also tap Navigation to launch turn-by-turn navigation.

 

Search for location

To search for a location with Google Maps, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Tap Maps.
  3. Tap the Search icon
  4. Enter the desired text and tap a selection in the drop-down list or tap the Enter key on the keyboard.

 

Select map mode

To select map mode with Google Maps, follow these steps:

Add browser bookmark

To add a browser bookmark, follow these steps:

  5. Tap a selection from the drop-down list or tap the Enter key on the keyboard.
  6. Tap the Menu key.

  4. Release your finger. Two highlight arrows appear.
  5. Touch and drag each highlight arrow to highlight the text you want to copy.
  6. At top of screen, tap the Copy icon (two overlapping sheets of paper).
  7. Touch and hold a text field to paste the text.
  8. Tap Paste.

 

Go forward / back a page

To navigate back to the previous Web page or forward to the next Web page, perform one of the following actions:

 

Go forward

  1. On any Web page, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Forward.

 

 

Go back

On any Web page, tap the Back key.

 

Turn on JavaScript setting

To turn on the JavaScript setting, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.

Search within a page

To search for text within a Web page, follow these steps:

Open new window

To open a new Web browser window, follow these steps:

Zoom in / out

Voice Search

Voice Search – Use

To use Google Voice Search on the Internet, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Tap Search (Google).
  3. Tap the Microphone icon.
  4. If necessary, tap Speak now.
  5. Speak your search term.
  6. Tap the desired search result.
  7. Note: Tap the Microphone icon at top to perform a voice search again.

 

Use Location – Turn on / off

‘Use Location’ allows Google to use your physical location to improve your search results and other services. To turn on or turn off ‘Use Location,’ follow these steps:

Turn on

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Location services.
  4. Tap to select the Location and Google search check box and enable.

Turn off

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Location services.
  4. Tap to clear the Location and Google search check box and disable.

 

SafeSearch – Turn on / off

To turn on or turn off SafeSearch, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.

Add new network

To add a new VPN network, follow these steps:

  7. Enter the required settings.

Wi-Fi

HotSpot – Find location

To locate a T-Mobile HotSpot from your device, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Tap Web.
  3. Navigate to http://hotspot.t-mobile.com/
  4. Tap HotSpot Locations.
  5. Tap Go to find a HotSpot location near you.
  6. Tap the text fields to enter your location information.
  7. Tap Submit.

 

Hotspot – Log in

To log in to a T-Mobile HotSpot from your device, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi Slider to turn on Wi-Fi. Slider moves right and turns green.
  5. Tap the desired HotSpot.
  6. If prompted, tap OK to sign in. You will be redirected to the HotSpot sign in Web page.
  7. If necessary, enter your User Name and Password.
  8. Tap Log in.

 

MAC address – Locate

To locate the Wi-Fi MAC address, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap About phone.
  4. Tap Status.
  5. Scroll to Wi-Fi MAC address.

 

Network – Add from available

To add a new Wi-Fi network from the available networks, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi Slider to turn on Wi-Fi. Slider moves right and turns green.
  5. Tap the network you want to add.
  6. If security is enabled, enter the password.
  7. Tap Connect.

 

Network – Add manually

To manually add a new Wi-Fi network, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi Slider to turn on Wi-Fi. Slider moves right and turns green.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and tap Add network.
  6. Enter the Network SSID.
  7. Tap the Security Drop-Down Arrow.
  8. Tap the security type.
  9. Enter other security credentials, if required.
  10. Tap Save.

 

Network – Scan for / connect to available

To scan for and connect to available Wi-Fi networks, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi Slider to turn on Wi-Fi. Slider moves right and turns green.
  5. Tap Scan.
  6. Tap the network you want to connect to.
  7. If security is enabled, enter the password.
  8. Tap Connect.

 

Network – Delete

To delete a Wi-Fi network, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi Slider to turn on Wi-Fi. Slider moves right and turns green.
  5. Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to delete.
  6. Tap Forget.

 

Network – Edit details

To edit network details (such as a password) for a secure network you have previously connected to, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi Slider to turn on Wi-Fi. Slider moves right and turns green.
  5. Scroll to and touch and hold the network you want to edit.
  6. Tap Change password.
  7. Edit the network name, security type, or password as desired.
  8. Tap Save.

 

Router – Get security key – Not supported

Wi-Fi – Turn on / turn off

To turn on Wi-Fi, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, touch and drag the Status bar down.

  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the Wi-Fi Slider to turn on Wi-Fi. Slider moves right and turns green.

 

 

Turn off

 

To turn off Wi-Fi, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, touch and drag the Status bar down.
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi icon to disable. The blue indicator light turns off.

 

OR

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap the Wi-Fi Slider to turn off Wi-Fi. Slider moves left and turns blue.

 

Wi-Fi – Wireless coverage indicators

To understand the different Wi-Fi coverage indicators on the display screen, refer to the following:

Wi-Fi Calling

Wi-Fi Calling can improve your coverage and allows you to make phone calls and send messages over an available Wi-Fi network. Unless your rate plan provides otherwise, Wi-Fi Calling minutes count the same as T-Mobile cellular calling minutes on your phone bill.

To use Wi-Fi Calling you must have a GBA SIM card (usually labeled TM9177), you must register your 9-1-1 address at my.t-mobile.com, Wi-Fi must be turned on and connected to a Wi-Fi network, and Wi-Fi calling must be turned on.

When the Wi-Fi Calling feature is active, your phone displays the Wi-Fi Calling wi-fi calling blue.JPG icon on your Home screen status bar.

Your phone does not automatically switch between Wi-Fi networks and the cellular network. To stay on a Wi-Fi call, you must remain within signal range of the Wi-Fi network you are using. As you leave the signal area, your phone beeps and displays a warning message alerting you that your call will drop if you leave the area.

Wi-Fi Calling offers these connection options:

  1. Wi-Fi Preferred: All calls are made over an available Wi-Fi network. If there are no available Wi-Fi networks, then calls are made over the cellular network.
  2. Wi-Fi Only: All calls are made over a Wi-Fi network. If there are no available Wi-Fi networks, phone calls will not connect.
  3. Cellular Preferred: All calls are made over the cellular network. If the cellular network is not available, then calls are made over an available Wi-Fi network.

 

Register 9-1-1 address

To use Wi-Fi calling, you must register your 9-1-1 address at my.t-mobile.com.

To register your 9-1-1 address, follow these steps:

  1. Go to www.my.t-mobile.com and log in to your T-Mobile account.
  2. Under Manage, click Your profile.
  3. Under Customer information, click Edit.
  4. Under 911 Address, enter the address where you use your phone most often.
  5. Click the Save changes button when finished.
  6. Note: It can take up to one hour for your 9-1-1 address to update.

 

Turn on Wi-Fi and connect to a Wi-Fi network

To use Wi-Fi Calling, Wi-Fi must be turned on and your phone must be connected to a Wi-Fi network.

To turn on Wi-Fi, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Tap the Wi-Fi Slider to turn on Wi-Fi. Slider moves right and turns green.
  5. Tap the network you want to add.
  6. If security is enabled, enter the password.
  7. Tap Connect.

 

Turn on Wi-Fi Calling

To turn on Wi-Fi Calling, follow these steps:

Important: To use Wi-Fi Calling, you must register your 9-1-1 address at my.t-mobile.com. If you have not registered your address, you phone will display a red Wi-Fi Calling wi-fi calling red.JPG icon. When you open the Notifications screen, you will see the following error message: Wi-Fi Calling error. Error: REG09 “Missing 911 Address.”

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap More.
  4. Tap Wi-Fi Calling to select check box and enable.

 

Note: When the Wi-Fi Calling feature is active, your phone will display the Wi-Fi Calling wi-fi calling blue.JPG icon on the Status bar. When you see the icon, you are ready to make phone calls and send messages over the Wi-Fi network.

 

Set Connection Preference

To set your connection preference, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap More.
  4. Tap Wi-Fi Calling Settings.
  5. Note: To tap, Wi-Fi Calling must be turned on.
  6. Tap Connection preferences.
  7. Select one of the following options:
    • Wi-Fi Preferred: All calls are made over an available Wi-Fi network. If there are no available Wi-Fi networks, then calls are made over the cellular network.
    • Wi-Fi Only: All calls are made over a Wi-Fi network. If there are no available Wi-Fi networks, phone calls will not connect.
    • Cellular Preferred: All calls are made over the cellular network. If the cellular network is not available, then calls are made over an available Wi-Fi network.
  8. Tap OK.

Tethering & Smartphone Mobile HotSpot / Wi-Fi Sharing

With Tethering, your phone can share its mobile data connection with a single computer over a USB cable. With Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (Wi-Fi Sharing), your phone can share its mobile data connection with other devices wirelessly.

To use Tethering or Smartphone Mobile HotSpot (Wi-Fi Sharing), your rate plan must include the Smartphone Mobile HotSpot add-on feature.

 

Connection Icons

When your device is sharing its data connection it displays one of the following icons on the Status bar:

Smartphone  Mobile HotSpot / Wi-Fi Sharing is active

 

Tethering

Your phone can share its mobile data connection with a single computer over a USB cable.

Tethering works with Windows® 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista®, Mac OS X, and Linux. For more information about tethering and operating systems, visit www.android.com/tether.

For Windows XP, you must have the appropriate driver installed on your computer before you can tether. To learn more, go to www.samsung.com/support.

Note: When you connect your phone to a computer with a USB cable, you can EITHER tether OR access files on the phone’s memory card, you cannot do both. If you want to use your computer to access the memory card, you must turn off tethering.

 

Tether Your Phone

To share your mobile data connection with a single computer by tethering, follow these steps:

  1. Connect a USB cord to the phone, then to a computer.
  2. If necessary, tap the Home key.
  3. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  4. Tap Settings.
  5. Tap More.
  6. Tap Tethering and Mobile HotSpot.
  7. Tap USB tethering to select check box and enable.

 

Your phone starts sharing its mobile network data connection with the computer over the USB connection.

 

Smartphone Mobile HotSpot / Wi-Fi Sharing

You can share your mobile data connection with other devices by turning your phone into a Smartphone Mobile HotSpot.

Note: When your phone is serving as a Smartphone Mobile HotSpot, you cannot use the Internet on the phone itself.

Smartphone Mobile HotSpot – Turn on / off

To turn your phone’s Smartphone Mobile HotSpot on or off, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap More.
  4. Tap Tethering and Mobile HotSpot.
  5. Tap the Mobile HotSpot Slider. Slider moves right and turns green.
  6. Mobile HotSpot is now active.

 

OR

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Applications icon.
  2. Tap Mobile HotSpot.
  3. Tap the Mobile HotSpot Slider. Slider moves right and turns green.
  4. Mobile HotSpot is now active.

 

Your phone starts broadcasting its Wi-Fi network name (SSID) so you can connect up to eight devices and share your mobile network data connection. Your phone’s default SSID is Samsung Galaxy Note_[xxxx].

 

To turn off, tap the Mobile HotSpot Slider again. The slider moves left and turns blue.

 

Smartphone Mobile HotSpot – Configure

To configure your phone’s Smartphone Mobile HotSpot, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap More.
  4. Tap Tethering and Mobile HotSpot.
  5. Tap Mobile HotSpot.
  6. Tap Configure.
  7. Enter the desired Network SSID.
  8. Under Security, tap the Drop-Down Arrow and then tap one of the following options:
    • Open 
    • WPA PSK
    • WPA2 PSK
  9. Enter the desired password other devices must use to connect.
  10. If desired, tap Show advanced options to select check box and enable.
  11. Tap to select the Broadcast channel and Maximum connections.
  12. Tap Save.

 

Smartphone Mobile HotSpot – Connect other devices

To connect other devices to your phone’s Smartphone Mobile HotSpot, follow  these steps:

  1. On the other device, search for available network Wi-Fi networks.
  2. Connect to your phone’s Network SSID. Your phone’s default SSID is Samsung Galaxy Note_[xxxx].
  3. Enter your password and connect.

Near Field Communication

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range communication technology that allows you to exchange text (also known as NFC tags), share digital content such as photos and videos, and connect electronic devices with just a touch. NFC tags can include text, phone numbers, virtual business card or contact info, and website URLs. Your phone contains the NFC technology that allows you to use certain services and features that require NFC capability.

 

NFC – Turn on / off

To turn NFC on, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap More.
  4. Tap NFC to select check box and enable.
  5. Note: Turn on Android Beam to send content. However, the feature’s default setting is to turn on when NFC is enabled.
  6. If necessary, tap Android Beam.
  7. Tap the Android Beam Slider. Slider moves right and turns green.
  8. Note: Android Beam automatically turns off when NFC is disabled.

 

To turn NFC on, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap More.
  4. Tap NFC to clear check box and disable.

 

NFC – Read tag

To read NFC tag information from another NFC-enabled device or from a printed tag, follow these steps:

Note: NFC must be turned on. Also, tag sharing must be enabled on the other device.

  1. Gently place the back of your phone against the NFC antenna location of the other device, or against the printed tag.
  2. When your phone has successfully read the tag, it will play a notification sound.
  3. The following tag categories can be received by your phone:
    • Pictures
    • URL tags
      • URL tags will automatically open the web address they contain in your internet browser
    • Contact tags
      1. When received, tap the desired account where the contact will be stored:
        • MobileLife Contacts
        • Phone
        • Google
      2. The contact is now saved.
      3. If desired, tap the Edit icon (pencil) and update the contact’s information.

 

NFC – Change settings – Not supported

Changing NFC settings other than turning NFC on or off is not supported.

NFC – Share media and contacts using Android Beam

With NFC, you can use your phone to quickly share pictures and other media.

You can share the following media:

  • Contacts
  • Web pages

To share media using NFC and Android Beam, follow these steps:

  1. On the receiving device, make sure NFC is enabled.
  2. From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap More.
  5. Tap NFC to select the check box and enable.
  6. If necessary, tap Android Beam then tap the Android Beam Slider to turn on. Slider moves right and turns green.
  7. Navigate to the desired media file (For example a web page).
  8. Gently place the back of your phone against the NFC antenna location of the other device. For most phones, place each phone back-to-back and upright.
  9. Note: For best results, navigate the receiving phone to its Home screen before transfer.
  10. On your screen, when the “Touch to Beam” message appears, touch the file thumbnail and hold until you see the thumbnail move away and disappear.
  11. Move phones away from each other.

Note: If a contact is sent, on the other device, tap to select an account storage location for the contact.

 

NFC – Write tag – Not supported

Writing content to an NFC tag is not supported.
