Error: 'Download was unsuccessful.' from the Play Store: T-Mobile G1 / myTouch 3G / myTouch Slide / Samsung Vibrant

If you receive this error message when trying to download an application or update from the Play Store, follow these steps:

 

  1. Check the available internal memory to verify that there is more than 25 MB of free space.
  2. Clear the cache of the Play Store application and download manager.. 
    • From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
    • Touch Settings.
    • Touch Applications.
    • Touch Manage applications.
    • Press the Menu key.
    • Touch Filter.
    • Touch All.
    • Scroll to and touch Download Manager.
    • Touch the Clear data button.
    • If prompted, touch OK on the warning that all the saved information will be deleted.
    • Press the Back key.
    • Scroll to and touch Market.
    • Touch the Clear data button.
    • If prompted, touch OK on the warning that all the saved information will be deleted.
    • Press the Home key.
  3. Verify wireless networks are on. 
    • For T-Mobile G1 / mytouch 3G / Vibrant: 
      1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
      2. Touch Settings.
      3. Touch Wireless Controls.
      4. Touch Mobile networks.
      5. Verify that the Use only 2G networks check box is cleared. If it is selected, touch it to clear.
      6. Press the Home key.
    • For myTouch Slide:  
      1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
      2. Touch Settings.
      3. Touch Wireless & networks.
      4. Verify the Mobile network check box is selected. If not, touch it to select.
      5. Touch Mobile networks.
      6. Touch Network Mode.
      7. Touch GSM / WCDMA auto.
  4. Remount and re-insert the memory card. 
    • From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
    • Touch Settings.
    • Touch SD card & phone storage or SD & phone storage.
    • Touch Unmount SD card.
    • Wait for the phone to say the card is unmounted.
    • Remove the memory card.
    • Re-insert the memory card.
  5. Perform a soft reset.
  6. Open the Play Store and attempt the download again.
  7. If the issue recurs, uninstall updates to the Play Store application, if there are any. 
    • From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
    • Touch Settings.
    • Touch Applications.
    • Touch Manage applications.
    • Press the Menu key.
    • Touch Filter.
    • Touch All.
    • Scroll to and touch Market.
    • Touch the Uninstall updates button if it is available.
    • Touch OK on the warning.
    • Press the Home key.
  8. Open the Play Store and attempt the download again.
  9. If the issue recurs, wait a few hours in case there is an issue with the Google servers.
