Choosing a Text Mode (Nokia 8801)
Your phone supports the following modes for entering text:
  • T9® predictive text mode (Dictionary ON)
  • Manual mode (Dictionary OFF)
  • Numeric text

    When you enter text, the entry mode is indicated by an icon located at top left of the display.

Text entry icons

There are two icons that indicate text mode (T9 or Manual) and four icons that indicate the text style (letter case style and number mode).
Text mode icons:
—T9 predictive text mode(Dictionary ON)

—Manual text mode (Dictionary OFF)
Text style icons:
—All caps (CAPS)
—Initial caps
—All lowercase
—Number mode
NOTE: The text mode and text style icons are combined on the screen. For instance, if you are using T9 predictive text mode and uppercase text style, the icons will appear as .

Selecting a text entry mode

  • To select T9 predictive text mode, select Options, and then select Dictionary on.
  • To select manual text mode, select Options, and then select Dictionary off.
  • To change between uppercase and lowercase text styles, press the Pound (#) key.
  • To change between letter and number modes, press and hold the Pound (#) key, and then select the desired mode.

T9 predictive text mode

T9 predictive text allows you to enter words with one keystroke per letter, and the phone will interpret the word that you want. The predictive text input is based on a built-in dictionary. You can also add new words to the dictionary. For more information, go to the User Manual (PDF).
To use T9 predictive text mode, perform the following steps:
1. Using the keypad on the phone, enter a word. Press each key only once for each letter. For example, to enter the, press 8, 4, 3.
2. When you have finished writing the word, perform one of the following actions:
  • If the word displays correctly, confirm the word by adding a space with the 0 key or by pressing the Right Navigation key.
  • If the word is incorrect, press the Star (*) key until you see the word that you want to use. When the word that you want appears, confirm the word by adding a space with the 0 key or by pressing the Right Navigation key.
NOTE: If a question mark (?) is displayed after the word, the word is not in the dictionary. To add the word to the dictionary, select Spell, and then using manual text mode, type the word. After you enter the word, select Save. When the dictionary is full, the new word replaces the oldest one that was added.
3. Enter the next word.

Manual text mode

Manual mode allows you to enter letters by pressing the key labeled with the letter you want until the correct letter displays. For example, to enter the, press 8 once, 4 twice, and then 3 twice. For more information, go to the User Manual (PDF).
To use manual text mode, perform the following steps:
1. Press a number key repeatedly until the desired character appears.
NOTE: Not all characters available under a number key are printed on the key.
2. Enter the next letter. If the next letter is located on the same key as the present one, wait until the cursor appears, or press one of the Scroll keys, and then enter the letter.
3. When you have finished entering the word, enter a space using the 0 key or by pressing the Right Navigation key.

TIPS

  • To enter a plus (+) sign, press the Star (*) key, and then select +.
  • To enter the at (@) symbol, press the Star (*) key, and then select @.
  • To enter a period (.) in T9 predictive text or manual text mode, press the 1 key once.
  • To enter a period (.) in number mode, press the Star (*) key, and then select *.
  • To insert a dash (-), press the Star (*) key, and then select -.
  • To enter a space, press the 0 key.
  • To insert a number, press and hold the desired number key.
  • To insert a symbol, press the Star (*) key, then scroll to and select the desired symbol.
  • To delete a character behind the cursor, select Clear.
  • To insert a smiley, select Options, select Insert Smiley, and then scroll to and select the desired smiley. You can also press the Star (*) key twice, and then scroll to and select the desired smiley.
