How to set up e-mail accounts (T-Mobile Dash™)
IMPORTANT: This article is intended for use with the T-Mobile Dash™ using Windows Mobile 6. If you have upgraded your T-Mobile Dash™ to Windows Mobile 5, use My E-mail (T-Mobile Dash™).

NOTE: This article provides setup instructions for the T-Mobile Dash running Windows Mobile 6. To determine which software version your T-Mobile Dash is running and obtain the necessary update, go to How do I determine what software version I have?
The T-Mobile Dash has a significantly enhanced interface to help set up your e-mail accounts quickly and easily. For most accounts, all you need to type is your e-mail address and password.
You can set up access to a maximum of six accounts on your device. The T-Mobile Dash supports access to a variety of account types and e-mail providers, such as: AOLŪ, Yahoo!Ū, Windows Live Hotmail, Microsoft Outlook/Exchange, and supports any POP3/IMAP4 account like Gmail, Comcast, Adelphia, etc.
To set up e-mail on your T-Mobile Dash, perform the following steps:
1. At the Home screen, select Set Up E-mail.
NOTE: If you previously set your Dash to ‘hide’ the Set Up E-mail icon, you can find it under Start, Accessories, and then Restore Set Up E-mail Plugin.

2. Select the desired e-mail account type. For specific instructions, select from the following options:
NOTE: Select Other E-mail to set up any other POP3 or IMAP4 account like Gmail, Comcast, Adelphia, and so on. Provide your e-mail address and password. For the most common ISP accounts, you will not be asked for the server addresses.

AOLŪ/AIMŪ Mail

To set up AOLŪ/AIMŪ Mail on your T-Mobile Dash, perform the following steps:
1. After selecting AOL/AIM Mail, read the Terms of Use, and then click Accept.

2. Type your e-mail address at Screen Name, and then type your Password. Select Next.

3. The message Set up Process is complete appears on your screen. Press Finish to be taken to your newly configured AOL/AIM mailbox.
NOTE: The device will attempt to sync your mailbox and download the past three days' worth of e-mail.

Windows Live Hotmail

To set up Windows Live Hotmail on your T-Mobile Dash, perform the following steps:
1. After selecting Windows Live, read the Terms of Use, and then click Accept.

2. Type your E-mail address and Password, and then select Next.

3. Click the options to display on your Today screen, and then select Next.
  • Live Search Bar puts a search bar on your Home/Today screen. You can use this to search the Internet for information by providing suitable key words.
  • Windows Live Services creates an entry on your Home screen that shows all Windows Live services (E-mail and Messenger) that you have set up. You can access your Windows Live Hotmail mailbox or your Windows Live Messenger right from the Home screen without having to navigate several menus.

4. Click to select items to sync, and then select Next.
  • Selecting Contacts and Messenger will merge your Windows Live Messenger online contact list with your device address book. If a buddy is online, you will be able to see his presence in your address book itself.
  • If you have an Outlook account set up, selecting Merge duplicates with Outlook will prevent duplicate entries that may already exist in your Outlook contact list.

5. Windows Live will begin synchronizing your e-mails and contacts. Select Done when synchronization is complete.

Yahoo! Mail

To set up Yahoo! Mail on your T-Mobile Dash, perform the following steps:
1. After selecting Yahoo! Mail, read the Terms of Use, and then select I Agree.

2. Type your Yahoo! ID and Password. Type the desired Display Name, and then select Next.
  • The Display Name is the name displayed with your e-mails. It lets the recipient know who the e-mail is from. If this is left blank, only your e-mail address will appear on e-mails.

3. The message Set up Process is complete appears on your screen. Select Finish to be taken to your newly configured Yahoo! mailbox.

Outlook E-mail

You can set up your device to synchronize with Microsoft Exchange server wirelessly, if your company supports it. Talk to your IT professional for server addresses and other settings.
To set up Outlook e-mail on your T-Mobile Dash, perform the following steps:
1. After selecting Outlook E-mail, select set up your device to sync with it.

2. Type your Server address, and then select Next.
NOTE: This is the same as your Outlook Web Access server address.

3. Type your User name, Password, and Domain, and then select Next.

4. Click to select the data to synchronize, and then select Finish.

Other E-mail

To set up other e-mail accounts on your T-Mobile Dash, perform the following steps:
1. After selecting Other E-mail, type your E-mail address and Password, and then select Next.
NOTE: The T-Mobile Dash is able to automatically configure several of the most popular e-mail account providers. If your provider is listed, select it from the provided drop down list.

If the account is not included in the drop down list, perform the following additional steps:

1. Type your Incoming Server address and Outgoing Server address, and then select Next.

2. Select the Server Type and Account Name Displayed.

3. Select Menu, and then select Done.

Changing default settings

Your device has certain default settings regarding the frequency of checking for new e-mails, the number of days to display e-mail for, how much of the e-mail to download during synchronization, and so on.
To change the default settings, perform the following steps:
1. From the Today screen, select Start, and then select Messaging.

4. Type the Account display name, and then select Next.

5. Type your Incoming mail server, and then select Next.

Deleting an e-mail account

You can set up a maximum of six POP/IMAP/Portal accounts, in addition to an Outlook account, on your device. If you try to set up an additional account after reaching the limit, you will be required to first delete an account, and then set up the new one you want.
To delete an e-mail account, perform the following steps:
1. From the Today screen, select Start, and then select Messaging.

2. The e-mail accounts set up on your device appear. Highlight the account to be deleted, select Menu, and then select Delete.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How often will my device check for new mail?

You can select a sync interval from as short as every 5 minutes to as long as every 4 hours. The default is every 30 minutes.
To change the default, go to Start, and then select Messaging. Select the desired account, and change the settings.

Will the device sync automatically with my mailbox?

Unless you set your Automatic Send/Receive to Manually, your device will sync with your mailbox automatically at the specified interval.

How can I change default settings?

To change the default settings, go to Start, select Messaging, and then select the mailbox of interest. Select Menu, and then select Settings to review the various settings. You can change the sync interval and the number of days you want e-mail downloaded for. You can select how much of the e-mail should be fetched on sync, and whether attachments should be downloaded automatically. You can also change your e-mail address, username, password, the name you would like displayed with your e-mails, and the incoming and outgoing servers.

Why does the e-mail I send out not display my name? How do I make sure my name is associated with the e-mails I send out?

Go to Start, select Messaging, and then select the account you want to associate your name with. Select Menu, select Settings, and then specify what name you want displayed with the e-mail you send out.

Why does my Windows Live Hotmail mailbox not sync automatically?

To automatically sync your Windows Live Hotmail inbox, go to Start, and then Windows Live. Select Menu, select Options, and then select Sync Schedule. The Sync Frequency defaults to Manual, so the mailbox does not sync automatically. Change the Sync Frequency to the desired interval, and then select Done.

Why can I only set up one Windows Live Hotmail account on the device?

This is a limitation of the Windows Live Hotmail service. You are only allowed to be logged into a single Windows Live Hotmail account at a time on your mobile device.

What does it mean to sync ‘contacts and messenger’ for Windows Live Hotmail?

If this box is checked, your Windows Live Messenger contacts will be merged with your address book and you will be able to see the presence status for your buddies in your phone book itself.

What is my server address for Outlook e-mail?

This is the Web address of your company’s Exchange server. Talk to your IT professional for this information.

What is ‘domain’ and do I need it?

Depending on how your company’s Exchange server is set up, you may need to specify a domain. Ask your IT professional for this information.

Can I sync my calendar and contacts wirelessly?

You can select what items you want to sync wirelessly, including your Outlook calendar, contacts, and tasks.

How often does my device sync my Outlook mailbox?

If your company is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) with Exchange ActiveSync, or a higher version, then you can use the Direct Push feature, which delivers e-mails to your Outlook inbox on your mobile device as soon as they arrive. You can turn on Direct Push by going to Start, and then selecting Comm Manager.
Alternatively, you can select a sync interval by going to Start, selecting ActiveSync, and then selecting Menu, and then Schedule. You can also select different sync intervals during Peak and Off-Peak times.

Where do I go to set up an e-mail account not listed on the 'Select Account' screen?

You can set up any POP3/IMAP4 account by selecting Other E-mail on the Select Account screen. If your account is listed in the drop down list, all you will need to provide is your e-mail address and password. If your account is not part of the list, you will need to provide additional information, such as the server addresses.

What are ‘Advanced Settings’?

Under Advanced Settings, you can select your sync interval, how many days to download e-mail for, and how much of the e-mail to fetch during sync.
