How Do I Perform a Device Upgrade? (T-Mobile MDA®)
T-Mobile provides a software update of Maintenance Release (MR1) for the T-Mobile MDA. The update includes many new features and updates that will improve the overall experience with the device. For a description of the changes made with this release, go to What Changes Should I Expect with the Maintenance Release (MR1)?
IMPORTANT: The software update need only be applied once. For information on how to verify your current software version, go to How Do I Determine What Software Version I Have?
NOTE: Before proceeding please ensure that all data on your MDA is backed up, and the e-mail settings for each of your e-mail accounts are known or are written down. Installing the new software will erase all data on the device. Data stored on the memory card will not be affected.
To perform a device upgrade, perform the following steps:
1. Ensure all desired media and documents are saved to the SD memory card if one is available, or have been transferred to a computer. For information on how to backup files to a computer, go to How to Backup Files to a Personal Computer.
NOTE: All third party applications and data that remains on the device prior to downloading the new software will be deleted and be un-retrievable. Third party applications will need to be re-downloaded after the new software has been installed.
2. Download the Update Utility from the T-Mobile Download Center.
3. From the File Download dialog box, click Save.

4. From the Save As dialog box, in the Save in drop-down menu, click to select Desktop.
5. In the File name text box, type T-Mobile MDA MSFP Upgrade, and then click Save.

6. From your computer desktop, double click T-Mobile MDA MSSP Upgrade.
7. From the RUU - InstallShield Wizard dialog box, click Next.

8. From the PDA Phone ROM Update Utility 2.6 dialog box, click the check box to select I understand the caution indicated above and have reviewed the Readme, and then click Next.
NOTE: Open the Readme file by clicking View Readme.

9. From the PDA Phone ROM Update Utility 2.6 dialog box, complete the four steps listed, and then click the check box to select I completed the steps indicated above.
10. Click Next.

NOTE: The utility will check for an ActiveSync connection and sufficient battery life.
11. From the PDA Phone ROM Update Utility 2.6 dialog box, click Update.

12. Click Next.

NOTE: Update progress will be shown on the computer and on the device. The upgrade process can take between 10-15 minutes. You may notice that the progress indicator also appears to stall at 85% and 95%. This is normal behavior.

13. Once the update has finished, the phone will reboot automatically. To close the Update Utility, click Finish.

NOTE: When the device boots up, it go through the initial start up routine as if the device was hard reset, or brand new out of the box. The screen will display a Windows Mobile screen with the Microsoft Logo.
14. The device will perform an additional update that takes approximately five minutes. When this occurs, the device will have a Pocket PC icon on the home screen and a status bar right below it. After the update is complete, the device will re-boot again.
NOTE: Once the device boots up it will have the new operating system (OS) installed. All previous e-mail accounts will need to be set up again, in addition to any device settings. Bluetooth®* headsets will also have to be re-paired with the device.
NOTE: The push e-mail feature will automatically be enabled on the device. This feature will not have to be turned on manually. Once the e-mail account(s) have been set up, e-mail will begin being pushed to the device.
