What Changes Should I Expect with the Maintenance Release (MR1)? (T-Mobile MDA®)
The Maintenance Release (MR1) software update for the T-Mobile MDA includes many new features and updates that will improve the overall experience with the device. For instructions on obtaining and installing this software upgrade, go to How Do I Perform a Device Upgrade? (T-Mobile MDA®)
Please see the list below for a brief description of the included updates.
  • The update includes Messaging and Service Feature Pack (MSFP) to enhance Microsoft Exchange Sever 2003 Service Pack 2. These features include:
    • MSFP adds Direct Push e-mail for customers with Microsoft Exchange Sever 2003 Service Pack 2. Direct Push is similar to the BlackBerry® push technology. When Exchange receives new e-mail, it is “pushed” to the device immediately. Prior to this release, the device could only “pull” e-mail from Exchange at specified intervals.
    • MSFP adds the ability to access and search the Exchange Global Address List (GAL). This allows customers to search for contacts within their organization directly from their device.
    • MSFP has the following advanced security features for Exchange Administrators:
      • Remote Wipe
      • Encryption
      • Certificate-based authentication
      • Advanced password policy with additional security settings

NOTE: These features are only for administrators within corporate networks.
NOTE: For more information about MSFP, go to Microsoft.
  • Using the Bluetooth® Stereo Profile, customers can listen to media stored on the device with a Bluetooth stereo headset.* On most headsets, when a new call is received, the media will pause and the call can be answered while using the headset.
  • The update improves device network auto rescan response. This is the time the device takes to search for a network when the signal is lost, or when the device returns to a coverage area from an area of no coverage. The rescan interval has been shortened to 45 seconds. Prior to this release, the device could take several minutes to search for a network.
  • Several multimedia features have been improved. The following improvements are available with the software update:
    • Customers will receive notification when a message is downloaded completely.
    • Customers have the ability to download multiple MMS messages sent to the device consecutively.
    • Picture size and resolution will not be modified unless the maximum picture size (3xx) is exceeded.
    • Customers will be taken directly into the body of a picture message unless there are multiple unread messages.
    • MMS Video has been renamed to video messaging.
    • Maximum video messaging size has increased from 80 kilobytes (KBs) to 270 KBs.
  • An Enhanced Data for Global Evolution (EDGE) coverage indicator icon has been added to the device. When EDGE services are available, customers will see an E on the top of the device next to the signal indicator.
  • T-Mobile GRPS has been changed to T-Mobile Data (GPRS).
NOTE: References to T-Mobile GPRS have been updated to T-Mobile Data (GPRS) to provide a more consistent experience.
  • An animated battery icon is now included. The battery icon will animate from low to high while charging.
  • The Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Manager feature allows customers to have the ability to copy multiple contacts from the phone to the SIM card.
  • A play button allows customers to play a brief sound preview of ringtones stored on the device.
  • There are two additional alert types or Events for messaging. Customers can now set different notifications for Downloading MMS and Sending MMS. The notifications can be set to vibrate, play a sound, flash a light, or be silent.
  • A limited Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) (t-zonesSM) browser is included. The device will have limited access to t-zones. The following links will be available to T-Mobile MDA customers:
    • My Help
    • My Account
